2023 Land Rover Defender 90 Trophy Edition: Shorter Trophy, Same Glory

2023 Land Rover Defender 90 Trophy Edition: Shorter Trophy, Same Glory

08/16/2022

The 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 Trophy Edition introduced earlier this year recalled the old Land Rover Camel Trophy rally trucks and proved a fitting celebration of the brand’s off-road history. Sadly, the shorter, two-door Defender 90 was left out of that celebration.

Thankfully, Land Rover has finally decided it’s time to give the smaller Defender the racy treatment with its own Trophy Edition for 2023. Just like the longer-wheelbase Defender 110 Trophy, the 90 is a limited edition model that affords its owners the chance to race in the North American Defender Trophy race, with the winning team then competing in the UK race.

Land Rovers and the Defender itself are known for being the Kings of Overlanding. For decades, these SUVs were used in safari trips and whenever someone needed to go well off the beaten path and forge new trails across the globe. Heck, even when it comes to racing, you can’t imagine iconic off-road racers without images of the Rally Raid Land Rover specials by Bowler popping up in many enthusiasts’ heads.

However, it was the 1980s Camel Trophy that truly brought the capabilities of the Defender to light for everyone, not just those who were dirt and trail experts and enthusiasts. These iconic yellow machines drove across the world in some of the most challenging and multi-day grueling adventure races known to man. Think of the Camel Trophy as the Olympics of off-roading, as competitors needed a vast skillset of vehicle recovery and trail making to participate, and in many races, specialists such as archeologists, ecologists, and other land-based scientists would join in as these special Defenders blazed new trails that they would not be able to cross themselves.

That amazing decade and race is what inspired Land Rover’s Trophy Edition for the 2022 Defender 110 (and now this 90). It was limited to 220 models, but those owners could also participate in the North American Trophy Competition in Asheville, North Carolina.

For the 2023 Defender Trophy Edition, Land Rover starts out with a Defender 90 P400 X-Dynamic SE, the same trim that kicks off the 110 Trophy. The amount of Trophy Editions also goes up to 250 models, so more people will get the chance to own this special edition. Not only does it get that iconic yellow wrapping, but these Defenders 90s come with the Extended Black Exterior Pack, a tow hitch receiver, an air suspension system, the Cold Climate Pack, Off-Road Pack, and the Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack. Other overlander parts include an expedition roof rack with a deployable ladder, winch, and integrated air compressor. A set of mud flaps try in vain to keep the mud slinging off the tires from marring that yellow paint, while a set of deep-sided rubber floor and cargo mats attempt the same inside.

Just like the purchase of the Defender Trophy in 2021, owners of the 2023 version will get the opportunity to participate in the North American Trophy Competition, a one-day off-road adventure race at the Land Rover Experience Center in Manchester, VT on October 8, 2022. Each of the 90 participants will be made into 15 two-person teams, and the winning team will go on to the UK to participate in the 2023 Classic Land Rover Trophy Competition. Among those who purchased a 2022 Defender 110 Trophy Edition, 15 two-person teams will also get to participate in their own wave of the North American Trophy, but will have a $5,000 entry fee. However, the winning Defender 110 team will also get the chance to travel to the UK to participate in a unique off-road experience, too. Owners will have until September 27, 2022, to register and it’s first come, first served for both competitions.

The Defender 90 Trophy Edition is priced at $96,475 and 220 will come to the US while only 30 will be sold in Canada.
