The car servicing company Kwik Fit has set up a ‘BOOT-camp’ to prepare drivers for the upcoming summer holidays. They found that 24 percent of drivers overpack, leading them to not be able to see out of the rear window.

Their research has also shown that families admit to overpacking their boot, with 81 percent of drivers only using three quarters of what they pack.

This can massively increase the risk of driving dangerously, as well as the chances of getting into an accident.

The research also found that 14 percent of Britons have admitted that they removed the spare tyre to accommodate more luggage.

One in ten (11 percent) have experienced an accident due to overpacking the car.

Bad packing has also led to some people crushing items in the car (18 percent), smashing the back windscreen when closing the boot (seven percent).

One in ten families even admitted to needing to take an extra car to accommodate for all of the luggage.

Some families (13 percent) have even risked going on holiday with so much packed. That they have to drive with their boot open.

It is estimated that British families expect to travel an average of 323 miles each over the summer.

Kwik Fit have also partnered with Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham, from the TV show SAS: Who Dares Wins, to give his own tips on how to pack properly for a staycation.

He said: “During my training I have learned all manner of life skills, from hand-to-hand combat, building my own shelter and hunting for food.

“But each time I went on a mission – there were two vital things to consider. Firstly, always ensure your vehicle is in top condition before you hit the road.

“And secondly – it’s important to pack for the journey and to pack essentials.
