Black Gold! Radford’s Type 62-2 Goes JPS

09/13/2021

If the run-of-the-mill Radford Type 62-2 isn’t enough for you, then the company has a proposal for you: something even more special. Just 12 of Radford’s modern homage to the obscure Lotus Type 62, a racing variant of the oddball Europa, will come in one of the most celebrated racing liveries of all time: the black and gold of John Player Special. Even better? These JPS Type 62-2s also come with more power. A lot more power.

This extra exclusive dozen packs a full 600 hp, utilizing the same Toyota-sourced 3.5-liter supercharged V-6 as other Type 62-2s. In order to support the power boost, the engine is modified with enhanced pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, engine tuning, and an upgraded supercharger.

If there’s a caveat, other than whatever the upcharge will be to acquire one, it’s that we understand that the JPS Type 62-2 will only be available with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Perhaps Radford will change its mind, or maybe someone ordering one can just cut the outfit a larger check to get a six-speed manual modified to work with their specific car. Regardless, the stick shift doesn’t seem to be officially available with the JPS Type 62-2.

Alongside its 10-layer black paint accented with hand-painted gold stripes, the JPS gets a few functional additions. The upgraded brakes are AP Monoblock calipers gripping carbon-ceramic rotors, while the 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels are carbon composite units from Dymag, wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Additionally, the JPS Type 62-2 sports larger air intakes in order to increase its cooling capacity, plus the front splitter and rear diffuser are enlarged for more downforce.

Want one? Well, you better get in line quickly, because the limited-run JPS Type 62-2 goes into production later this year, with deliveries pegged to occur in 2022.
