Cadillac's hot-rod CT4-V and CT5-V arrive on May 30

As much of the world pivots away from sedans and sedan-like things, Cadillac is sticking hot engines into its low-tops. On May 30, we’ll be introduced to the CT4-V and CT5-V at an event in the Motor City. The CT5 sportback debuted at the New York auto show but hasn’t yet gone on sale. We haven’t seen the CT4, except for spy shots, but it too looks like a Buick Regal-style sport/hatchback, just smaller.

The question is engines. The sweet-looking new twin-turbo V8 Blackwing motor, which will “make up to 550 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque,” seems like overkill for the mid- to compact-size CT5 and way too much for the smaller CT4. The Cadillac CT6-V intro video said the engine belongs exclusively to that car, at least in max output. But is the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6, making 404 hp, too little?

That V6 would probably work perfectly in the CT4-V, which should be about the size of the Mercedes-Benz CLA, but the CT5 might need something else. Because the bigger of the two CTs rides on GM’s Alpha platform, which underpins the Chevrolet Camaro, it opens a slew of engine options, most notably the SS’s 6.2-liter LT1 making 455 hp. That would seem like the sweet spot.

We’ll find out more next week.
