Camry or RAV4: Which Toyota Costs Less to Insure?10/25/2021
This isn’t the first time we’ve compared the 2021 RAV4 compact SUV and Camry midsize sedan. The current and former Toyota best-sellers may not share a body style, but they’re both backed up by the brand’s reputation for reliability and value. One contrast we haven’t covered before is how the two family cars stack up in terms of insurance costs. How much does each cost to insure? And does the Camry or RAV4 offer lower premiums? For answers to those questions, we’ve partnered with Insure.com.
Insure.com has done the legwork to determine how much the 2021 model year Camry and RAV4 cost to insure. Average rates were determined using data from six large insurance carriers in 10 zip codes per state. Camry LE vs. RAV4 LE Insurance Costs
Model ranges for the Camry and RAV4 begin with the LE trim level. Each is equipped with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four, but power varies from 203 horsepower for the RAV4 to between 202 and 206 hp for the Camry depending on trim and drivetrain layout. Both models are offered with FWD and AWD.
The Camry LE and RAV4 LE Hybrids add another wrinkle. Each one is outfitted with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four and an electric motor, but the Camry’s system makes only 208 combined-system hp whereas the RAV4 outputs a combined total of 219 hp. Both use a CVT, and the Camry LE Hybrid is FWD while the RAV4 LE Hybrid is AWD.
Starting at, the SUV is priced nearly $2,000 more than the sedan, but Insure.com reports an annual opposed to the RAV4 LE Hybrid’s $1,471. Choosing the SUV could mean a savings in insurance costs of more than $900 over the course of five years.

Camry SE vs. RAV4 XLE Insurance Costs
Above the LE level, the Camry SE and RAV4 XLE are the next expensive trims in their respective lineups.
Again, the Camry stickers for less than the RAV4, but the RAV4 is in some cases nearly $200 a year less to insure. The 2021 Camry SE FWD retails for $27,585 and the RAV4 XLE FWD for $28,860, but on average, Camry owners pay $1,632 in annual premiums while RAV4 owners pay just $1,461. Even upscale RAV4 XLE Premium models have lower premiums than the Camry SE, although there was one exception. Insure.com reports the average annual premium for the 2021 RAV4 XLE Premium Hybrid is $1,617, making it the most expensive RAV4 to insure, though still not more expensive than the Camry SE Nightshade, which averages $1,625.
Compared to the base model, the RAV4 XLE adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring, and rear automatic emergency braking is available. The SUV upgrades to 17-inch alloys and an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, features the Camry had. The RAV4 XLE also picks up automatic headlights with integrated foglights, a dual-zone climate control system, sun visors with sliding extensions and illuminated vanity mirrors, and five USB ports, up from a single port on the RAV4 LE (the Camry SE has just two). The RAV4 XLE Premium further upgrades to 19-inch wheels, a synthetic leather interior, power liftgate, standard moonroof, and push-button start.
In contrast, the Camry SE is more of a sport trim. Its cabin gets paddle shifters with the leather-trimmed steering wheel, and exterior differences include standard 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, and dual exhaust tips, which the RAV4 XLE already has.

Camry XLE vs. RAV4 Adventure Insurance Costs
Once more, the trim names don’t match, but the Camry XLE and RAV4 Adventure each slot in under their line’s respective XSE trim levels. Sticker prices between the two lines are also closest at these grades, with the 2021 RAV4 Adventure stickering for $34,570, less than the 2021 Camry XLE V-6’s $36,095 but more than the Camry XLE Hybrid and I-4 models.
Curiously, the XLE V-6 was not the Camry with the highest average premiums, despite its high retail price. The highest average premiums were for the XLE Hybrid model, just edging out the TRD trim. The XLE Hybrid’s $1,773 in annual premiums were the highest between the RAV4 and Camry regardless of trim or price. The Camry XLE FWD averaged $1,645 a year, the XLE V-6 $1,724, and the RAV4 Adventure was the lowest, averaging $1,499 in premiums each year for the AWD model.
Like the RAV4 XLE, the Camry XLE gets blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and available rear automatic emergency braking. The Camry XLE is further equipped with a customizable 7.0-inch instrument cluster screen (up from 4.2 inches), heated front seats, rear seats with adjustable headrests, wood-like interior trim, ambient interior lighting, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and two more USB ports than the Camry SE, for a total of four.
The RAV4 Adventure is built for, well, adventure. It’s outfitted for new experiences with 19-inch wheels, overfenders, and raised roof rails. Inside, Toyota gave the 2021 RAV4 Adventure an 8.0-inch touchscreen, leather-trimmed shift lever, and orange accents. The cargo area also gets in on the upgrades with a 120V power outlet and deckside-mounted storage net.

Camry XSE vs. RAV4 XSE Hybrid Insurance Costs
Trim level names again sync up for the Camry and RAV4 XSE, but the RAV4 version of this trim is available only as a hybrid and with AWD. The Camry XSE meanwhile is available with any of the 2021 Camry’s powertrains and with FWD or AWD.
The sedan once more offers lower MSRPs than the SUV, but not for average annual insurance premiums. The 2021 Camry XSE FWD stickers for $31,250, the XSE Hybrid for $33,745, and the XSE V-6 for $36,645, with only the V-6 Camry’s price exceeding the RAV4 XSE’s $36,490 before adding option packages. But the RAV4 XSE Hybrid’s average premium is just $1,515, whereas the Camry XSEs are all well over $1,600.
In terms of standard features, the RAV4 catches up to the Camry at the XSE trim level. This grade of the SUV gets automatic on-off LED projector beam headlights with automatic high-beams, 7.0-inch instrument cluster screen, heated front seats, and eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat. Elements like blue stitching in the upholstery, blue ambient lighting, and a digital rearview mirror set apart the RAV4 XSE Hybrid.
For its part, the Camry XSE turns up the wick on premium-looking features with a patterned metal interior trim, 19-inch wheels, gloss-black front grille with sport mesh insert, and quad chrome exhaust tips.

Camry TRD vs. RAV4 TRD Off-Road Insurance Costs
Both the 2021 Camry and RAV4 have Toyota Racing Development (TRD) models, but as you might expect, the sedan trim level is geared more for street performance while the SUV version is for leaving the pavement behind. The RAV4 TRD even has the words “Off-Road” right in the name.
The 2021 Camry TRD comes only with the V-6 and sports a dark motif that includes standard black accents on the headlights and taillights, black window trim and side mirrors, and black badges except the TRD badges, which come in red. The model also features TRD matte black alloy wheels, a TRD gloss-black front splitter, side aero skirts, and rear diffuser with red pinstriping, and TRD cat-back dual exhaust with polished stainless-steel tips. Inside, changes consist of red seat belts, stitching, and fabric inserts, red-stitched TRD headrest logo, aluminum sport pedals, black leather shift knob, and trim-specific floormats.
The 2021 RAV4 TRD Off-Road only comes as a non-hybrid model, and with AWD. It includes a TRD-tuned suspension, standard integrated LED foglights, overfenders like the Adventure model, black badging, and a TRD-stamped stainless steel front skidplate. Red stitching, front headrests embroidered with the TRD logo, and TRD all-weather floormats and cargo liner are also standard on the RAV4 TRD.
The 2021 Camry TRD retails for $33,285, much cheaper than the RAV4 TRD Off-Road at $37,195. But the pattern in insurance premiums persists, with an annual premium averaging $1,741 for the Camry and just $1,475 for the RAV4.

Camry vs. RAV4: Which Costs More to Insure?
Across multiple trims, the RAV4 is less expensive to insure than the Camry. What we also didn’t expect was seeing that hybrid models were more expensive to insure for our average driver. In addition to the high average premiums for the 2021 RAV4 Limited and XLE Premium Hybrids, the most expensive 2021 Camry to insure is the XLE Hybrid, with a national average of $1,773 per year.
Like any kind of shopping, insurance hunting will ultimately boil down to what a person can afford. And for many, part of the process of buying a new car means finding the best deal. Insurance companies weigh rating factors differently, and getting quotes from multiple providers could make the difference between getting the car you want at a reasonable price and having to forgo certain features.
