Malcolm McKay, spokesperson for the HCVA said MOT’s should look more closely at fuel hoses now cars will be fitted with E10 petrol. He said the higher amounts of ethanol will “attack fuel hoses” which will be a major safety risk for owners of older vehicles.

He urged road users to replace “tired fuel hoses” ahead of the new changes but warned this is not a requirement on an MOT test.

However, he said these “maybe should be” checked on cars which are not compatible with the new petrol.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “Cars with old tired fuel hoses, you should replace them anyway.

“That’s the key thing here, it’s maintenance, it’s looking after the cars.

“It’s not really an issue with classic cars not having MOT’s.

“In fact, tired fuel hoses don’t fail the MOT anyway, maybe they should.

“Maybe it’s something that should be looked at now we have the ethanol issue.

“[Ethanol] does attack fuel hoses and other components in the fuel line.

“A split fuel hose may result in fire.”

According to GOV.UK, garages will only check for damage on a fuel system.

The check will determine there are no leaks in the system and the pipes and hoses are secure and in a good condition.

Mechanics will also check the fuel cap fastens and seals securely after topping up.
