Campaigners say vehicles that use “sustainable fuels” should be exempt as they help to “reduce pollution”. This is because the sustainable fuels will use “existing pumps and infrastructure”.

Campaigners say they are likely to cause “much less environmental damage” than other vehicles.

The poll founder said they could also cause less damage than installing electric car chargers.

The online petition was launched by Gary Smith last month.

He said: “The Government should exempt new car/van/motorbike/trucks that use sustainable fuels from the 2030 petrol and diesel new car sales ban.

“Vehicles that use fuels from sustainable sources should be exempt from the ban to help reduce pollution and overall emissions faster.

“Sustainable fuels could use existing pumps/infrastructure for petrol/diesel.

“[They can] cause much less environmental damage than installing many more EV chargers.

“Change to vehicles that use sustainable fuels could be more realistic and affordable for many.”

The petition is expected to run for six months and has a deadline of 21 December.

So far just 413 signatures have been received with 10,000 needed for a Government response.

The rule change could be debated in the House of Commons if 100,000 signatures are received.

Sustainable fuels are made from renewable materials instead of traditional petrol or diesel fuel.
