They warned older drivers take “much longer to recuperate” from glare which can affect road vision. They warned as many as one-third of older drivers are affected by eyesight conditions which can also restrict what they can see.

The claims were made during the Older Driver Forum’s first public webinar on ‘the risks faced by older drivers’.

The Forum was established by Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Safety Team in a bid to keep older drivers safe on the road.

Rob Heard, spokesperson for the Older Drivers Forum has urged road users to ideally get their eyesight tested “every year”.

He said: “This is something that affects all of us when we get older.

“It can occur gradually and without us realising.

“We recommend people undertake an eyesight test at least every two years but I would say perhaps every year is a good idea, especially as we get to the latter years.

“We know many older people avoid driving at night because they can’t see so clearly.

“Actually that’s just due to our eyes.

“As we get older, our eyes, like any other muscle, start to relax and not work as quickly as they used to.

“In fact, at the age of 15 your eyesight if it’s glared out by headlights will take up to two seconds to recuperate.

“Whereas at the age of 65 this will take up to nine seconds.

“So you can really understand as we get older why we don’t want to drive because we get that glare from headlights.
