Ford delays deliveries of its first electric car due to urgent software ‘safety risk’

Dealerships have been told new cars “must not be released to consumers” while investigations studying the issue are ongoing. The glitch is down to problems with the cars’ new digital eCall system installed in vehicles.

Ford said the tool currently displays “incorrect location information” which could lead to a safety risk.

According to Ford, the eCall tool automatically dials the emergency services and will send over the vehicle’s location.

The service will enable a call with an emergency dispatcher so they can check whether the driver is conscious or severely injured.

eCall can also be initiated manually by pressing SOS in the overhead console.

However, a glitch with the tool could prevent emergency services from accessing a vehicle in the event of an accident.

A spokesperson from Ford UK said the problem had developed due to a “software issue”.

They said: “This issue has the potential to cause a theoretical risk if the vehicle location cannot be identified when relying solely on eCall, which automatically contacts emergency services after a serious accident.”

The location tool is a new requirement for all models manufactured after 2018, which is why cars have been delayed.x

Ford said it will notify customers who have already received their models once an over-the-air update becomes available.

This will ensure road users do not need to visit a dealership or garage to have the software fix installed.

However, a spokesperson added the issue does not affect the “driveability” of the car.

The issue is only a software one and Ford confirms there are “no direct safety risks” with the vehicle itself.

It said: “We will notify customers once an over-the-air software update is available to repair vehicles without the need for a dealer visit.

“This does not affect the drivability of the car as there are no direct safety risks caused by the operation of the vehicle.”

The UK glitch is not the first issue to hit the new mustang Mach-E with similar issues reported in the United States.

In February, Ford confirmed around 4,500 customers would have to wait to receive their new electric car.

The firm did not announce what was causing the delay to the deliveries but confirmed it was down to their commitment to “deliver a quality vehicle”.

Ford’s Mach-E is available to buy for around £40,000 in the UK.

Ford claims the car is capable of up to 379 miles on a single charge at home or at a charging station.

It claims drivers can charge their car to 73 miles in just 10 minutes using a high power charger.
