Many driving instructors have announced plans to resume lessons from Wednesday despite the DVSA not revealing its plans for the new tier system. Leading instructors RED Driving School says they will resume lessons and training from 2 December in line with the new tiered system.
In a statement on Twitter, Red Driving School said: “In line with recent government announcements, we will resume driving lessons and in-vehicle training throughout the whole of England (in Tiers 1, 2 and 3) from Wednesday 2 December.
“Driving lessons in the following Scottish councils are suspended from 6pm on 20th November through to and including 11th December.
“Stirling, West Lothian, South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, S&N Lanarkshire, W&E Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Glasgow City.
“Driving lessons and tests in Wales continue to operate too following our COVID-safe guidelines.
“Driving lessons and tests in Wales continue to operate following our COVID-safe guidelines. We are still taking bookings for new customers in all areas.”
Bill Plant Driving School has also confirmed that classed will resume from Thursday 3rd December and have urged those interested to pre-book.
In a post on their website, Bill Plant says: “Driving lessons will resume on Thursday 3rd December in England after the second National Lockdown, due to COVID-19, has finished.
“Across Scotland, you will be able to book driving lessons apart from in Tier 4 areas. Driving lessons have already resumed in Wales.”

They added: “In prior communication from the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) they stated Driver and Rider training should not start until 3rd December.
“Furthermore, the GOV.UK website states driving instructors should not carry out driving lessons and motorcycle training in England up to and including Wednesday 2nd December 2020.”
However, the DVSA has yet to announce whether lessons can go ahead with a tweet suggesting this may not be so straightforward.
The statement said: “More information will be available in due course on what the new tier system in England means for testing and training.”
Speaking in the House of Commons, Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham demanded to know whether lessons could continue under the new measures.
However, Transport minister Rachael Maclean said although lessons were allowed under the previous system it was too early to say what the new rules were.
She said: “It is not yet clear what impact the new restrictions will have on driving lessons and driving tests.
“But the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency will update its advice as soon as it has clarity.”
A Driving school in Coventry hit back against the plans and the DVSA’s approach to handling driving lessons.
They said: “It is just three working days away to start Tier system, when are you (DVSA) going to clear it with us?!!” (sic)
Campaigners have also attacked the lack of direction with Twitter group Help Our Driving Instructors saying the current stance was “ridiculous”.
They said: “This is beyond ridiculous – Are you honestly going to give us an update within 48 hours of the whole county unlocking!
“You couldn’t even make this up! You threaten to take our licence away if we teach but you treat us like this for the second time! What a mess.”
