Mazda Announces Straight-Six-Powered CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 SUVs

10/07/2021

Mazda is expanding its SUV lineup with the announcement of the forthcoming CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 SUVs for the U.S. market (the CX-70 and CX-90 will also be available in other North American markets). Mazda will also introduce narrower-bodied CX-60 and CX-80 SUVs for markets outside of North America, such as Europe and Japan.

All three American-bound SUVs (CX-50, -70, and -90) will ride on a new platform that houses a longitudinally mounted powertrain (like the new rear-drive Mazda 6) and will rely on either a gas-powered turbocharged I-6 engine or a plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid setup for motivation. Look for the Huntsville, Alabama-built CX-50 to debut this November, with the larger CX-70 and CX-90 following later.

Look for the CX-50 to join the CX-5 in the compact SUV segment, with the new model likely aiming to more directly challenge the small SUVs of luxury brands and the recently revised CX-5 maintaining its place in the mainstream compact SUV segment. The two-row CX-70, meanwhile, likely will do battle in the midsize SUV class, while the three-row CX-90 is sure to take on other large three-row SUVs.

Whether the CX-90 complements or replaces Mazda’s current three-row SUV, the CX-9 remains to be seen. Regardless, we expect to know more about these upcoming Mazda models when the CX-50 shows itself later this year.
