For those of us in the U.S., the idea of a big car show is usually a weekend or multi-day affair. That is not the case with the Mooneyes Hot Rod Custom show in Yokohama, Japan. Instead, it’s a super-concentrated, one-day automotive spectacle that’s been happening every December for the past 28 years. The show features more than 200 customized cars, several hundred one-off motorcycles, and roughly 200 vendor booths selling new and vintage clothing, parts, and collectibles.
During this year’s show setup, HOT ROD got a sneak peek of what’s in store for the thousands of locals as well as a healthy attendance from hot rodders from all over the Eastern Hemisphere (especially Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, and so on) who flowed through the gates when the show opened.
More than just a car show, there were four live bands playing throughout the day and an artist display, where you could have something pinstriped or flamed or buy already-completed artwork. The show also featured a pinstripe contest and celebrity parade to open the show. Here are some pictures we snapped as Mooneyes Japan was setting up.
