Why AGS Is The Perfect Automatic Transmission For City Driving

Traffic in our cities is getting worse with each day. Driving in bumper to bumper traffic during peak hours has become a daily routine for many, and it has certainly taken a toll on both you and your car. And this is something that many car-owners would relate to. While the chances of traffic conditions improving in our cities are next to impossible, what one can do is choose the right kind of car to drive in the city. In fact, some of the best city cars which offer both comfort and convenience while driving in start-stop traffic are cars that come with the Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car manufacturer, introduced this automatic transmission technology in 2014, with the Celerio hatchback.

Comfortable and Convenient

You know how it is with a manual car, it requires you to put that extra effort while using the clutch, however, an automatic car equipped with AGS is much simpler and easier to adapt, even for first-time drivers. That’s because its clutch-less pedal operation makes driving easy and comfortable. Furthermore, the AGS transmission also comes with the Creep function which allows the car to move at speeds of about 5 km/h without the need to accelerate. This feature comes in handy while driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic because you just need to control the brakes. It also has a Kick Down function that comes in handy while driving on inclines. The Kick Down function lowers the gear to provide more power when you need it.

Easy and Affordable

There was a time when we did not use the word ‘Affordable’ in association with an automatic car. However, AGS automatic transmission technology has changed that notion altogether. It has made automatic cars more accessible than ever because it’s a smarter and simpler automatic transmission system. While it was the Celerio that first came with AGS, Maruti Suzuki currently offers Auto Gear Shift transmission in seven of its models, including the Alto K10, S-Presso, WagonR, Celerio, Swift, Dzire, and Ignis. So, going for an automatic car with AGS you have a lot of choices as available at every price range, starting from as low as under ₹ 4.5 lakh.

Smart and Fuel Efficient

When you are driving a car with a manual transmission in bumper to bumper traffic, many drivers tend to keep one foot on the clutch for convenience, and while we do not realise it, even slight pressure on the clutch partially engages it. This not only affects the fuel efficiency of your car but also reduces the life of the clutch plates. But, that’s not a problem here because in a car with AGS, you do not have a clutch pedal. As an interesting matter of fact, Maruti Suzuki cars with AGS have similar fuel efficiency figures as their respective manual counterparts!

We hope these reasons are enough to convince you. But, to add to it, AGS is also low maintenance. Auto Gear Shift or AGS technology is essentially a manual gearbox that is paired with electric actuators which control gear shifts and clutch operation electronically, and the change in load is gradual and precise. Also, the technology is convincingly more cost-effective as compared to a conventional automatic transmission, making AGS a better choice for the long run.
