Get a Degree in Hatchbackology with the 1984 Renault Encore01/15/2021
After American Motors proved just small enough to fail in the eyes of the American government in the late 1970s, France stepped in to offer a partnership with then-state-owned Renault. The result was some interesting Franco-Wisconsonian machinery, including the Premier (the chassis of which was used to underpin many Chryslers later on) and the Alliance/Encore. Based on the Renault 9, the Encore was the hatchback version of this cheap-yet-modern economy car.
The Encore didn’t shake up the American car-buying world, of course, and AMC got snarfed up by Chrysler as a means to obtain the Jeep brand plus the engineering of the Premier chassis.
