Mazda sold 626s here from 1978 all the way through 2002, but few recall the handsome-but-slow-selling rear-wheel-drive 626s of the 1978-1982 model years. To meet the challenge of the roomy, economical front-wheel-drive Accord and Camry, Mazda designed an all-new 626 for 1983. Known as the fourth-generation Capella at home, this car helped Mazda make the jump from fringe brand to major player here. Here’s a magazine advertisement for the 1984 626 Sport Coupe.

For 1984, all those standard features and an $8,645 price tag (about $22,100 in 2020 dollars) looked very attractive to American car buyers. Sure, you had to pay extra for air conditioning or a radio, but that was typical of the era.
