Chip Shortage Hits Ford Mustang Mach-E Production

Automakers have been feeling the effects of the semiconductor shortage for a little over a year now, since the pandemic prompted a sharp turn by chip manufacturers to personal electronics. The fallout from the shortage is still being acutely felt in the industry, with a number of manufacturers expecting it to last well into 2022, as suppliers struggle to increase output.

Of course, not all manufacturers and not all vehicle models have been affected equally, but it probably won’t surprise anyone that battery-electric models have been among those seeing more production halts and delays.

One of the latest victims of the shortage is the Ford Mustang Mach-E, with the automaker informed buyers who’ve placed orders that their vehicles will be delayed by six weeks, if those orders were placed between July 5 of this year and October 1. Macheforum has obtained a draft of an email that is expected to be sent to those who’ve ordered a Mach-E since the first week of July.

“The global semiconductor chip shortages are affecting our ability to keep up with demand. While that’s no excuse, it is a reality,” the draft of the email obtained by macheforum.com reads.

“We’d like you to know that while we’re working nonstop to deliver your very own Mustang Mach-E vehicle, we project your vehicle delivery will be delayed by a minimum of six weeks. Once your vehicle receives the required chip, your vehicle status will be updated, and you’ll receive an email with an estimated week of delivery.”

The automaker is expected to make up for the delay by offering buyers 250 kWh of free charging via the FordPass network, in addition to the same amount that buyers would receive with the vehicle itself, effectively doubling the bonus.

The Mach-E itself has seen brisk demand since arriving on sale in the first quarter of 2021, in what was a very difficult time for the industry. In late spring, production numbers of the Mach-E even eclipsed those of the gas-engined Ford Mustang. Ford also recently reported that Mach-E sales during the month of July grew 15.8 percent compared to the previous month, even though retail sales of all vehicles overall were down 37.7 percent compared to July 2020, due to a number of factors.

The extra 250 kWh of charging via FordPass will soften the blow for some buyers, but Ford is not out of the woods yet when it comes to the chip shortage issue overall. Optioned with the smaller of the two batteries, the 250 kWh will be good for about four complete recharge cycles, or about three when optioned with the larger of the two battery options. That’s not nothing, but needless to say Ford will perhaps be lucky to avoid longer delays for the Mach-E and other vehicles due to the semiconductor shortage over the next 12 months.
