Ford Will Announce Some Kind of GT News on America's Birthday

Just a week after Ford’s factory GT Le Mans program came to an end with this year’s running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the automaker is hinting that some kind of big news regarding the GT supercar is coming. And Ford has picked a very special time and place to announce the news: July 4th at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Happy Birthday, America.

Ford hasn’t given any other hints on what this announcement might contain. But the automaker did publish a teaser image, seen above, showing a Ford GT with a giant wing and a new roof scoop. Director of Ford Performance Hermann Salenbauch and Multimatic Chief Technical Officer Larry Holt will be the ones to make the July 4th announcement.

So what exactly are we expecting to be announced? We don’t know for sure, but we can make some educated guesses. Maybe it’s a track-special edition of the Ford GT road car, with more power and aero features from the race car like that wing and roof scoop. It could also be another GT-based race car, intended for a series other than the World Endurance Championship, where Ford just ended its factory effort. On Twitter, Road & Track contributor Bozi Tatarevic did some sleuthing—you can see the whole thread here—and in particular, he pointed out that the car in the photo might possibly have a roll cage like that seen in Ford’s endurance racer:

Slightly different angle but you can see a tube on the LM car in that exact position.

At this point in time, it’s tough to say what Ford has up its sleeve. But no matter what it is, we’re pretty certain we’re going to like it.
