1983: Why Rent the Corolla When You Can Rent the Town Car?04/03/2020
Like televisions and long-distance phone calls, rental cars have become much cheaper than they were during the dark days of the Late Malaise Era. So, $39.95 per day for a Lincoln Town Car from Budget seemed like a pretty good deal (even though that comes to well over $100 per day in 2020 dollars).
But the rear-wheel-drive TE72 Toyota Corolla, with its eager 3T-C pushrod engine, was a pretty decent car by the standards of the era (especially if you were just renting it and didn’t have to worry about rust). However, paying the equivalent of $105.67/day to rent a Corolla when you could have the 8-track player and Cartier clock of the Lincoln must have hurt.
