2020 Toyota 4Runner Gets a Price Hike, More Standard Features08/01/2019
Toyota’s off-road 4Runner is a decade old now, but its reliability, rugged competence, and throwback charm keep it a popular option. For 2020, the brand is updating the SUV. Good news: More features come standard. Bad news: You have to pay for them, and not just a little bit.
What’s new across the lineup? An 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is a big step up from the previous 6.1-inch unit, and it now enables Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The redesigned instrument cluster now has a 4.2-inch screen between the dials. Rear passengers can keep devices charged with two USB ports. The Toyota Safety Sense-P suite brings a pre-collision system, lane departure warning, automatic high-beams, and adaptive cruise control.
On the entry-level SR5 trim, the price of this added modernity rings to $37,140 for 4×2 models and $39,015 for 4×4 models, increases of $735 from before. TRD Off-Road is now $40,860, $1,255 more than the 2019 model.
Premium designation on SR5 and TRD Off-Road adds a smart key with push-button start, heated seats, upgraded audio, and other niceties. For these privileges, Toyota asks for an additional $3,195. This brings prices of SR5 Premium to $40,335 for 4×2 and $42,210 for 4×4, representing an increase of $2,100 over last year’s equivalents. TRD Off-Road Premium retails at $43,590, a $2,075 rise.
The hardcore TRD Pro model we just drove on Hell’s Revenge trail in Utah gets a cat-back exhaust system plus updated HVAC controls shared with the Limited trim. TRD Pro’s $50,885 price is an increase of $2,975, while Limited 4×2 at $46,005 and 4×4 at $48,040 is $1,260 more than before.
During the writing of this article, inadvertently holding the shift key caused us several times to type $Runner instead of 4Runner—fitting, perhaps, given the pretty chunk of change Toyota asks for 2020 4Runner. Now cresting $50,000 at the top end places the TRD Pro among well-optioned Jeep Wranglers and in the neighborhood of luxury crossovers like the Audi Q5. But if it’s a 4Runner you’re after, there’s no alternative—those off-road tires will have no problem crushing your piggy bank open.
