25 Alternatives If You Can\u2019t Wait for the Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick is expected to make a big splash in the small truck world. If you’re waiting for Ford’s return to mini trucking, it might be worth holding out to get your small, hybrid pickup. That said, if you can’t wait to get something to haul your little trailer, your home improvement store bounties, or anything in between, we’ve put a list together of the trucks and crossovers that can haul or tow as much as the Maverick—or a lot more. While these might not check all of the Maverick’s boxes, they can at least pull your jet skis to the lake without trouble.

The Honda Ridgeline hasn’t exactly been a giant on the sales charts, but this crossover-based pickup is about as close to a direct competitor for Ford’s upcoming Maverick as you’re going to find on sale today. The V6-powered pickup doesn’t have hybrid tech to help squeeze more miles out of your fuel, but it does have more towing capacity than the Maverick. Is the trade-off worth it? Well, that’s for you to decide.

2021 HONDA RIDGELINE REVIEW

Another contender in the relatively small pickup world is Ford’s own mid-size Ranger. This body-on-frame pickup might not share much with the Ford Maverick other than its logo and a pickup bed, but the Ranger does cover a lot of the bases that Maverick buyers will expect from the upcoming truck. The mid-size Ranger is also nimbler in urban environments than its full-size stablemate, the F-150. The Ford Ranger also starts within shouting distance of the Ford Maverick.

Ford is far from the only player when it comes to mid-size pickups. In fact, it’s one of the more plentiful places to look for lots of options. Like the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet’s Colorado is larger than the Maverick and doesn’t offer a hybrid in its lineup. That said, the Colorado can tow considerably more than the Maverick in certain trims, and still gives you the maneuverability of a smaller pickup with plenty of truck.

Again, like its Chevrolet cousin, this GMC doesn’t offer a hybrid variant. It does tow the same as the Chevy and can haul just about anything most homeowners will need.

Like most of the other vehicles on this list, there isn’t a hybrid version of the Frontier, but it does out-tow the Maverick. That means if towing is a high priority, the Frontier can more than get the job done.

Rated at just over 2000 pounds worth of towing, pulling a small trailer behind a Bronco Sport isn’t out of the question. It also has space in the cargo area to haul smaller loads like mulch or dirt. More important to some, it is another fresh vehicle from the Ford portfolio that is still new enough you don’t yet see them filling the mall parking lot.

The Telluride can also fit a couch from Ikea that measured nearly seven feet long. That’s more space than the Maverick offers in its bed. Now, admittedly, if you need to haul something tall, you’re more limited. And, the Telluride currently is only available with one gasoline engine and lacks a hybrid option.

Unlike the Ford Explorer, there isn’t a hybrid variant of the Pathfinder, and only one powertrain is available, a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 284 hp feeding a nine-speed transmission.

With the Honda Ridgeline on this list, it only makes sense to include its crossover counterpart. The Honda Pilot uses the same powertrain as the Ridgeline, which makes sense considering it’s effectively a Ridgeline with a fixed bed cap. The Pilot does lose some of the odd features that the Ridgeline offers, like the under-bed storage area, but it does gain more some enclosed storage. The Pilot also loses some towing capabilities and can only pull 3500 pounds behind it, but that’s still within the Maverick’s range.
