Build or Buy: Harlequin Jetta VR6 (What?)04/06/2020
Unless you live under a rock, you’re quite familiar with the wacky Harlequin Golf. These…interesting cars are well sought after by…discerning collectors. If you do a little research, you’ll be shocked to find out these little multi-color hatchbacks never sold well in North America. So this…unique treatment never extended to other models. But that hasn’t stopped fans from creating their own. Looking for something really different? Then get yourself a Harlequin Jetta. Or make one yourself. The choice is up to you.

No, Volkswagen never made a Harlequin Jetta, but that hasn’t stopped one devoted fan from making his own. And from the looks of it, he’s done quite a good job. A basic modder would have just painted the body panels and been done with it. But this Jetta even has painted door jambs to make the build look legit.
Inside are period-correct multi-color striped seats. And this ’00 Jetta even comes with two MOMO steering wheels, including a rare Benetton Formula wheel.
Best of all, this Jetta has a VR6 under the hood connected to a 5-speed manual transmission. And both the motor and tranny have upgrades.
Sure, this Jetta Harlequin needs some work, but it would be a killer project car. For more information, check out the Facebook Marketplace ad. The car is in Ortonville, MI, and the current asking price is $4000 or best offer.

We’ll get this out of the way right up front: this VR6 Jetta has an automatic transmission. Now we know that turns a few of you off, but there’s also a healthy amount of readers who can’t or won’t drive stick shift cars. No judgments.
Now if you’re looking to build your own Harlequin Jetta homage, this is a great car to start with. Almost too great. The current owner bought it from the original owner, and the car has only 67,000 miles. Needless to say, it’s ridiculously clean inside and out. And it’s 100% stock down to its OEM BBS wheels.
So part of us thinks it would be a shame to tear it apart to paint it the playful colors that are key to the Harlequin look. But there’s the other part of us that thinks “Meh, it’s an automatic.” (I guess we do have a little bit of judginess)
Regardless, this Jetta GLX is a looker. You can get more information on thesamba.com classified ad. This ’94 Jetta GLX VR6 is in San Antonio, TX, and the current asking price is a super-reasonable $5500.
