Hyundai is creating a new sub-brand for electric vehicles (EV) called Ioniq. Starting next year, the Korean carmaker plans to launch a range of models including all-electric SUVs and a sedan under this brand.

The brand will now spawn a family of vehicles that will include a mid-size all-electric SUV called Ioniq 5 planned for early 2021, a sedan based on the Prophecy concept called the Ioniq 6 scheduled for 2022 and the Ioniq 7 that is due in 2024.

The Ioniq range of cars will be based on Hyundai’s electric global modular platform (E-GMP). These cars will have fast charging capability.

Hyundai has used the Ioniq name plate for a 5-door car that comes with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains. These variants will remain in production.

The Ioniq Electric and Hybrid were showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Ioniq Electric uses a 38.3 kWh battery and an electric motor that has an output of 134 BHP and 295 Nm. The hybrid variant is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor with an output of 43 BHP. The engine is paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.
