Tesla under investigation for ‘Passenger Play’ feature

If asked to remove the feature, Tesla should be able to disable the gameplay via a simple over-the-air update.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla’s ‘Passenger Play’ feature – allowing gameplay to function on the car’s central touchscreen display while the vehicle is in motion.

Reports suggest that NHTSA has opened a preliminary evaluation of an estimated 5,80,000 Tesla cars for allowing passengers to play games on the central display while the vehicle is in motion.

While the feature was available on all Tesla models since Dec 2020, the system only allowed the user to play games when the car was parked. However, earlier this month, it was reported that the only safeguard against playing while driving was a prompt asking the user to agree that only passengers would play when the vehicle is in motion.

If asked to remove the feature, Tesla should be able to disable the gameplay via a simple over-the-air update.
