F1 Champ Lewis Hamilton Launches Race Team to Compete in Extreme E Series09/09/2020
Lewis Hamilton, the six-time Formula 1 champion, has formed a race team to compete in the all-electric, off-road Extreme E series set to begin in 2021. It’s a chance, Hamilton says, to combine two of his to passions, racing and saving the planet.
Hamilton does not plan to drive in the series with his new team—X44.
The X44 name pays homage to Hamilton’s car number for Mercedes in Formula 1.
Extreme E is led by CEO and Founder Alejandro Aga, who also founded the Formula E open-wheel series. The new series is designed to help bring awareness to electrification as well as climate issues to different regions of the world.
A tentative schedule includes races in Senegal in January, Saudi Arabia in March, Nepal in May, Greenland in August and Brazil in October. The goal is to race at arctic, desert, rainforest, glacier, and coastal destinations and use the different platforms to highlight global warming and other environmental issues.
“Having my own team is a totally new challenge for me but one I feel very excited about,” said Hamilton, who has become a vocal activist on many social issues. “Extreme E really appealed to me because of its environmental focus. Every single one of us has the power to make a difference, and it means so much to me that I can use my love of racing, together with my love for our planet, to have a positive impact.
“Not only will we visit remote locations facing the front line of the climate crisis, we will also work closely with these locations and leading climate experts to share our knowledge and leave behind a positive legacy in each location which goes far beyond the race track. “
The series vehicle is an E-SUV named Odyssey 21 and is manufactured by Spark Racing Technology. According to the Extreme E series, it is at the cutting edge of innovation for electric vehicles and can go 0-to-100 km (62.1 mph) in 4.5 seconds.
“As Founder of X44, I am looking forward to building my team around important values such as sustainability and equality,” Hamilton said. “None of us are perfect and we all have improvements to make, but I am excited to use our platform to highlight the most serious issues facing our planet and the solutions we can all be part of.”
Agag is happy to have Hamilton as one of the face’s of the new series.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lewis Hamilton and his X44 team to Extreme E,” Agag said. “Like us, Lewis is hugely passionate about motorsport, but also shares our belief that we can use sport to highlight subjects which are vital to the world, such as climate change and equality.”
Other teams and drivers previously announced include Chip Ganassi Racing and Andretti United (USA), Abt and HWA (Germany), Techeetah (Indonesia), QEV Technologies (Spain), and British team Veloce Racing.
