Rain generates jumbled F1 Hungary practice rundown
08/02/2019Red Bull outpaced Ferrari and Mercedes in a rain-hampered Friday practice for the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Pierre Gasly paced Friday practice for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, but with each of the fastest times set inside the first 10 minutes ahead of some weather, don’t read too much into the time sheets.
Normally, seeing Sebastian Vettel in P13 would cause a few heart attacks and a Red Bull one-two would have Mercedes scratching their heads, but these times were not indicative of race pace.
The session was further interrupted in its infancy when Alex Albon dipped his left-rear into the grass and span into the tire barrier at the final corner.
With some drivers attempting to set a headline-grabbing time and others trying to gain as much long-run data as possible in the short amount of dry running, the order was jumbled about somewhat.
Red Bull split their drivers across the soft and medium tires and, with just +0.055 separating the pair, Gasly ended the day narrowly ahead of teammate Max Verstappen.
“I think the main thing for us is that FP1 was strong and FP2 was also strong for us, in the dry and also in the wet,” said Gasly. “So far, I’m happy with the car, with the few laps that we did, and let’s see what we can fight for tomorrow.”
With the forecast for Saturday’s qualifying session changing constantly from dry to wet, it may not turn out to have been a complete waste of a session for those drivers who did venture out on the intermediate tires for a few exploratory laps.
“The weather at the moment seems to be similar to today, so it could be really tricky conditions,” said Gasly. “It was good to get some laps on the dry and on the wet this afternoon.”
