George Russell: 'Back to reality' for Williams

Despite challenging the midfield runners in Hungary, George Russell described the race as “back to reality” for Williams.

The Brit just missed out on Q2 in qualifying by under a tenth, a huge improvement for a Williams team who have been languishing at the back throughout 2019.

Russell was again in the action come race day, finishing ahead of SportPesa Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi, but he still described the race as a case of “back to reality” for the Grove outfit.

“Yesterday definitely exceeded expectations, so it was a little bit back to reality today,” Russell told reporters at the Hungaroring.

“I had a good first lap and made up two positions on Magnussen and Kvyat at turn four and five, which was pretty fun. It was nice to be racing other drivers.

“We’ve still got work to do but there are a lot of positives to take from this weekend. We’ve made a good step forward.”

Robert Kubica couldn’t get among the pack like his team-mate and finished last of the runners in P19, a lap down on Russell.

He was grateful though for the army of Polish fans who turned up to support him.

“The race was as expected. We had to manage the tyres to get to the end with a one-stop strategy,” he explained.

“The feeling wasn’t great in the car, similar to yesterday. After the break we have completely different tracks, we will have to wait and see if we are able to close the gap, like George was able to do here.”
