'High chance' of Vettel decision before F1 returns04/17/2020
Sebastian Vettel has said there is a “high chance” a decision about his Ferrari future will be made before Formula 1 returns to action.
With most of the world remaining in lockdown mode over the coming weeks and months, Formula 1 is potentially looking at July or August to get a heavily revised 2020 season underway.
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the campaign was the future of the four-time World Champion, who is currently in the final year of his Ferrari deal.
In a video press conference, though, Vettel revealed that he is in talks with Ferrari over a new contract and an agreement could be in place before the drivers have even had chance to step foot in the car again.
“It depends when we will have the first race,” Vettel said.
“There is a high chance we will have to make a decision before there will be the first race because at the moment it looks like there will be no race before June or even July.
“The main priority at first was to ensure that we’re all dealing with the situation in the right way. Therefore, everything was put on hold and I can imagine that’s the same everywhere else and it was the same for us.
“It’s not like a couple of days after Australia we said ‘right now [we’ll talk]. We will make progress.”
As for the length of the new contract, Vettel said he was not sure at the moment how long a new deal would last.
The rumour mill, fired up by Sky Sports in Italy, says a one-year extension is on the table.
“Whatever the deal will be like, it will be whatever I and the team will be comfortable with,” Vettel added.
“So in terms of duration I don’t know. Normally the contracts I’ve had in the past were all three-year deals.
“I know I’m one of the more experienced drivers in Formula 1 but I’m not the oldest and I don’t think there’s an age limit in this regard.”
Vettel has also revealed that he is in talks about taking a pay cut on his current Ferrari deal to help ease the financial strain on his team, while he has also acquired a simulator for a potential tilt at virtual racing.
