Nico Rosberg also held talks about joining Ferrari12/03/2019
Former chief press officer at Ferrari, Alberto Antonini, has revealed Nico Rosberg also held talks with the Scuderia during his career.
The season finale in Abu Dhabi was somewhat overshadowed by another whirlwind of rumours linking Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari in 2021 once his current contract expires with Mercedes at the end of the 2020 campaign.
Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport was the catalyst after reporting that Hamilton had twice met Ferrari president John Elkann this year, something which Hamilton did not deny taking place when asked specifically about the report in Abu Dhabi.
Writing in his latest column for Italy’s Formula Passion, Antonini shared some snippets of information and made the point that the leak to Gazzetta dello Sport must have been made on purpose by someone deeply involved in the Hamilton/Ferrari situation.
“I honestly do not know if the Hamilton to Ferrari rumours are true,” Antonini wrote.
“But what is certain is that when there are rumours and stories of contact already been, it is because someone who has deep knowledge of the situation is comfortable in passing it on.”
Antonini, who worked for Ferrari between 2015 and the end of the 2018 season when Maurizio Arrivabene left his role as Ferrari team principal, then dropped in that Ferrari had also held private talks with Rosberg, presumably during in the same timeframe as Antonini working at the Scuderia.
The difference being that the Rosberg talks were never leaked…until now.
“When Nico Rosberg came to visit us in the office in Maranello, so to speak, nobody knew,” Antonini added.
Antonini did not shed any further light at this stage, ending his column by saying: “But let’s keep something for the next columns.”
