Stefano Domenicali believes Lewis Hamilton record will be broken one day

10/06/2021

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expects one day even the daunting record of most race wins, held by Lewis Hamilton, will fall.

Few expected the heights seven-time former World Champion Michael Schumacher reached to ever be matched, but Hamilton has gone on in his career to conquer several of Schumacher’s iconic benchmarks.

With 100 career victories, Hamilton now leads the way in that category while the Briton also has the most pole positions and podiums in Formula 1 history among his accomplishments.

And also a seven-time World Champion, Hamilton is now pursuing an eighth title which would see him eclipse that ultimate record he currently shares with Schumacher.

This kind of success is the stuff of dreams for any Formula 1 driver, but Domenicali is sure that one day Hamilton will also be surpassed.

“We thought Michael Schumacher’s records could not be surpassed, but Lewis succeeded,” Domenicali told Sky Sports F1.

“Similarly, I believe Hamilton’s number of wins will be beaten in the future, that’s the beauty of the sport.

“I’m sure Michael has been a great reference for Lewis and that Lewis will be a great reference for the other drivers in the future. I have incredible respect for what he has been able to accomplish.”

Hamilton has been the dominant force in Formula 1 since the turbo-hybrid era began in 2014, winning six of the seven World Championships on offer in that time.

Only in 2016 was he denied by his former Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who retired just after becoming World Champion.

But in pursuit of that eighth title, Hamilton has met one of his sternest challengers yet in the form of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

With only seven rounds remaining of the 2021 campaign, Hamilton holds a lead of only two points over Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship.
