Toyota Is Making a New Hypercar to Race at Le Mans in 2021

06/14/2019

The team with the best chance to win Le Mans this Sunday, Toyota Gazoo Racing, just announced that it’ll be back for the 2020/2021 World Endurance Championship season, racing in the new Hypercar class. And its car for the job, the GR Super Sport previewed in road-going concept form last year, is already in the works at the company’s technical centers in Toyota City, Higashi-Fuji, and Cologne.

The car may very likely use a version of the 2.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 found in the current TS050 LMP1 Hybrid. That would make a lot of sense, given what we know about the GR Super Sport already.

The GR Super Sport will join the Aston Martin Valkyire, and possibly the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhuas SCG007 along with a number of road-car-based contenders that haven’t been announced yet in the Hypercar class.

As for the 2019/2020 WEC season, Toyota will fight against Rebellion Racing, SMP Racing, and LMP1 rookie Ginetta, which will soon make a badass V-8 road car called the Acula.
