Villeneuve has a go at 'clearly slower' Kubica06/11/2019
Jacques Villeneuve has openly admitted that he is not a fan of Robert Kubica’s comeback, saying he is “clearly slower” than his rookie team-mate George Russell.
Nine years after his last F1 grand prix and with his career seemingly over after suffering severe arm injuries in a rally crash, Kubica returned to the Formula 1 grid this season with Williams.
It has been anything but a successful return.
While Williams are struggling, slowest of all the teams, Kubica is proving to be slowest of all the drivers.
The Pole has yet to beat his rookie team-mate Russell on a Sunday and has also been out-qualified seven from seven.
Villeneuve is not impressed.
“I was not a fan of him returning,” he told TVP Sport.
“For me Formula One is for the elite, it is for the absolute best.
“The only thing that counts is that Robert is clearly slower than his team-mate, who is after all a debutant.
“Results matter here.”
Earlier this season, having been beaten by Russell in the opening four grands prix, Kubica claimed that his chassis was different to Russell’s.
One race later, Spain, and Williams handed Russell his team-mate’s chassis. He out-qualified the Pole and finished ahead of him in the grand prix.
Asked about claims that Kubica’s FW42 is not the same as Russell’s, Villeneuve replied: “I do not know. I’m not in the team. You can not see everything from the outside.
“But such situations in Formula 1 are not likely to happen. These cars are very similar to each other.
“I do not know … maybe the settings don’t match Robert’s style, and they suit Russell.
“So yes, of course it can be.”
